Subject:                               The Value of Sustainability

For my visual essay, I’m leaning strongly towards what makes for good sustainable design. I’m very interested in sustainability and I want to pursue how it is being implemented. I would like to focus on some of the latest designs that are LEED certified, and maybe one that isn’t so I can do a little compare and contrast on the issue. I’m about 95% set on that topic, however Andrew mentioned American Affluence the other day and that is another topic I’m very interested in. I’m not sure if I will write on this, I will look into combining them. If you have any concerns or feedback I’d love to hear them.

  1. I’m fairly certain that I want to write on sustainability, its current state, several designs implementing it (good or bad), and value in good design or good purchasing. If you have any insight on how to approach this or narrow it down it would be greatly appreciated.
  2. The focus of this essay would be how sustainability can look just as good (actually better, in my opinion) and still do good by the environment standards. I could bring examples from the different levels of certification and whether it was designed well or if ‘add ons’ were purchased to go green, or both.
  3. I would like to style this essay on something that could be used on its own for reading, but having it fit into Dwell, Wired, or a magazine that focuses on current/latest trends so this essay can reach anyone interested in the topic. I want it to be known in the architecture community but also make it available to the average person, so it capable of producing a change or informing people.
  4. As of right now it looks like I shouldn’t struggle with too many deadlines in the near future. Some things to be concerned about is my new studio project. It will be given October 7, and from there I’ll better be able to plan ahead to see any conflictions, I’ll keep you posted.
    1. For the research portion, I don’t see any deadline conflictions currently. With the current studio project just given, I’ll have to split research between this and that, but with several overlaps. I plan on finishing research around the 19th.
    2. For images to be utilized, I will largely have to find them on the internet as there are not many sustainable buildings around here. This will continue with the research portion and possibly longer, roughly the 22nd.
    3. For receiving feedback, I’ll continually be participating in class reviews as well as seeking help while working in studio. As this essay gets further along I would like to have a one on one with you around the 20th or 21st.

I need to flip through some magazines in the near future to see what style of writing they are using in their articles. This will help narrow down my visual essays layout. I should be able to connect this essay with my next studio project, this should allow for research overlap and ultimately help me with essay content.
